Nail Polish Review: Barry M Matte Nail Paint in Espresso

Bought this nail polish yesterday after seeing it on the Barry M website. This is a weird one. It goes on glossy and dries to a matte finish. Looks a little bit like coating your nails in rubber. I had to put on several layers because of the weird consistency but it went on fairly easily. The only problem is the fact that so far I haven't been able to find a topcoat for it, so it does chip quite easily.

I did use a new basecoat though (review to follow) Sally Hansen Maximum Growth, which I highly recommend. Otherwise you end up with slightly stained nails. Still, a nice deep black and looks effective.

Products used:

  • Barry M Matte Nail Paint in Espresso: £3.99
  • Sally Hansen Maximum Growth : £4.99

Not nail polish related

So this is my hair from last night. It took forever to do and I burnt my scalp several times. But needs must. For those of you wondering, I had the Cardiff University Freshers Ball last night.

Sorry for being AWOL

Last week was freshers week. A highly confusing and very stressful time. Raging hormones, lots of alcohol... you get the idea.  Plus a couple of very crazy months. But I can honestly tell you guys that from now on I will endeavour to give you at least one post a week.

Starting with this week.

Stay tuned and keep scribbling.

Two tone nails

Two tone nails using Miss Sporty and Barry M Silver Foil to tip. Easy manicure.

Monochrome nails

Painted using about four coats of Seventeen Quicker Slicker Colour in Nightshade. Really thin and needed to be built up. Drys very quick though. Topcoated using Seventeen Off the Wall Graffiti Nail Effects in Monochrome.
Quick, easy, effective.

Candystripe nails... again.

As you guys can tell candystripe justhappens to be one of my favourite nail art patterns. This one was using Barry M Strawberry Ice Cream and Sinful Colours Hot Pink. I use Micropore rather than striping tape though, it just works better.
Happy Scribbling,

Ciaté Caviar Nails

Just tried the ciaté caviar manicure. Great effect but probably shouldnt have applied just before bedtime! All the beads are coming off in my bed! Not good. I think this is a manicure for a special night out rather than a wearable one.
Application was rather messy. All those little balls!! (not a euphemism, you dirty rascals...) the polish itself sounded lovely (cookies and cream) but was very sheer and needed several coats just to get a tint.
Not sure Id pay for this one. I got it for free. Leave your caviar experiences below.

That old chestnut

And by that, I mean dying my hair. Yep, you guessed it, its that time again. The time I have to redye and get rid of any trace that I am in fact a natural (whisper it!) blonde. Shocking I know.

As its that time again, I thought I'd give you guys a run down on what dyes are currently chilling out in various layers on my scalp, since september 2012.

1. Clairol Extreme Nice 'n Easy Flame Red Hair Dye 7RR

This is the first ever hair dye I have used, and was, shall we say, an expierience. First off, if you are, like me, a natural blonde; going red can be problematic. At first, mine came out orange. And when I say orange, I mean orange. Second, I decided it would be a great idea to do my hair on my own, minus a patch test in a fairly unventilated room. Not a good idea. AT ALL.

This hair dye was difficult to rub in, kept matting my hair up. The colour itself came out initially orangey red but then faded to what you can see in the picture, a fairly nice, dark ginger. Pretty close to my dads hair colour actually. But it faded pretty quick. And stained alot of towels and sheets in the process.

2. Schwarzkopf Live XXL Real Red 35

Yep, thats me, the bright red one on the left. So this one came out VERY red. I mean luminous red. quite nice actually. This time I did my hair with my mothers help, and got all of it.

Much easier than the 'nice and easy' stuff and actually came out red. Lasted really well too, but did fade to more of a pink, rather than a gingery copper red. Pink does not suit me. at least not as a hair colour.

3. L'Oreal Feria by Preference P76 Pure Spice Power

Excuse the odd picture. This one was, terrible. dye took ages to wash out and ran for at least a week. The colour itself was great to start with, but faded in about two weeks. Not great. Again, this one went pink upon fading. And I do not suit pink hair.

4. Garnier Olia Permanent Hair Colour 6.60 Intense Red

This is by far the best colour I have used. This one has no ammonia and smelt quite nice, with really nice results. After all that dying my hair was quite dry but after using this, it started to come back to normal a little bit.

Application was a weird experience. As its oil based, the hair gets matted up very easily and that was a bit of a problem. As well as the fact I could shape my hair into a dorsal fin... Yeah, not ideal. Washing out took forever, nearly an hour and a half, my poor grandmother kept having to check I was okay.

The colour itself has lasted pretty well, its now a deep coppery red, which is good, and so far I've had to redye about once a month, my hair grows like wildfire. This is by far the best one.

Till next time,

Happy Scribbling.  xoxo

Candy texture nails.

boyfriend did the pink bits. Barry M texture nail polish and Barry M nail art pen.

Crocodile nail art

Nail art using Barry M Nail Effects in Silver Foil and Burghundy Croc.
Keep on Scribbling! X

note to self...

Never try to scratch your eye with freshly painted nails. Nail polish as mascara is never a good look.

Sparkly pink nails

Exactly the same method as night nails just substituting nail polish with Barry M Nail Paint in 303 Bright Purple and Barry M Nail Paint in 349 Rose Quartz Glitter.

Happy Scribbling!

Night time sparkles

Very easy manicure to do.

Step 1: basecoat.

Step 2: apply blue nail polish. Im using Barry M Gelly nail paint in Blackberry.

Step 3: apply several coats.

Step 4: allow to dry.

Step 5: apply a sparkly topcoat. Im using Barry M Nail Paint in 350 Diamond Glitter.

Allow to dry and apply a final clear topcoat to protect.

Simple!! Happy Scribbling!

Water marbled nails

By +Karen Sulkowski

Marble nails

This one is done using Barry M Blood Orange as a base coat. Allow this to completely dry and then dot a few white dots (Im using Natural Collection Nail Tip Whitener) Immediately press down on nail with a scrunched up plastic bag. Allow to dry. Then dot a few silver dots. Im using Barry M silver foil. Repeat withthe plastic bag. Allow to dry. Topcoat.

geometric nails

This was done by painting the nail with 17 Sky Blue and then painting diagonally with Miss Sporty NeonPink. I then used Sally Hansen Hard as Nails as a topcoat.

WHEN USING BLUE NAIL POLISH, ALWAYS USE A BASECOAT.

Magnetic Nails

This is Cosmic Glow for Barry M's magnetic range. Works really well. Topcoated with Sally Hansen Hard as Nails

Red Nails

Pretty self explanatory really. Im using Barry M Blood Orange and Sally /hansen Hard as Nails basecoat as a topcoat.

Newspaper Nails

This was created by painting the nails a pale lilac and then using vodka to transfer newspaper ink onto the nail then topcoating it. The transfers around the cuticles wear off very quickly leaving you with neswpaper nails!
